Helen Flavel
I want to tell you about myself and our dedicated team. Before retiring last year, I was a director of Ozdirect Pty.Ltd. and a consultant in Ron Flavel Business Advisers, since its establishment in 1994. I worked with a wide range of Indigenous clients and communities. I also manage the Helen Flavel Foundation and have been involved in humanitarian work in Bali since 1994. Watching Sarah, my Granddaughter, flourish into a bright, capable student started me thinking that it would be an excellent investment to give a gift of education to a young person. This would be a gift that would last them a lifetime and help them throughout their lives.
The sponsorship money came firstly from my husband Ron and I. When our family and friends heard about the children they also offered to sponsor a child. Since then, many people in Bali have heard about the work we are doing and have e-mailed me on the plight of many children. Schooling isn't compulsory in Bali, children in most cases can only go to school if the money is available to cover their education. With this in my mind, I decided to develop a Website and bring our work to the attention of as many people as possible.
We have been able to give 600 students a sponsorship since forming the Helen Flavel Foundation in March 2004.

Syd Joseph
Syd Joseph, Director of the Aurora English School in Japan has kindly offered to take on the role of Teaching Adviser to our Learning Centre
We have had many programs with him and I was amazed by his performance and his dedication during the 2 weeks courses he runs for us at the Learning Centre. Syd also sponsors two children through our sponsor scheme and he ensures that they are as comfortable as possible.
Syd is an excellent teacher and lecturer, his talent in explaining pedagogical skills are very clear and easy to understand. Syd showed us practical examples on how to manage big classes and how to make fun classroom situations through songs and games. These are things which our teachers usually know only in theory and until now the teachers had not had the opportunity to see it work in practice.
Syd has broadened the knowledge of the teachers, showing them how to teach young learners properly. Many teachers now come to me and ask if I can invite Syd to give workshops to other groups of teachers again later this year. His ability to pass on knowledge is invaluable and his workshops are always full to capacity with eager participants.
I am extremely honoured to have Syd Joseph as our valued teaching adviser. Not only for the help has he given to our students, but to many teachers of English in Singaraja Bali. We are all anxiously waiting for his next lot of workshops and class teaching in December this year.
