Humanitarian trip to Bali February 20th to 11th March 2004.

I had intended to tackle the major problem of repairing or replacing a few of the 9 roofs in the Aged Care Home. I was happy to find that the Indonesian Government had looked favourably on a submission asking for financial help to replace the leaking roofs. This enabled me to move on the wish list which I ask for and was forwarded to me late last year.

The Wana Seraya Aged Care home is in Denpasar and houses 50 men and women who are all over the age of 80 years. Although their living conditions are very sparse, the home is run by compassionate people who take pride in making sure the residents are comfortable. I was told early last year about this home and of the plight of the men and women living there, some of these people could not get around by themselves and the home did not own one wheelchair or walking frame. In May 2003 the Largs Bay Rotary members in Adelaide South Australia, supplied me with four wheelchairs and four walking frames, Garuda Indonesia Airlines freighted them free of charge to Bali and I delivered to the home. From there the wish list came about and I am delight to say that apart from the office equipment on the list, I have been able to purchase everything else.

On my list you will see five televisions, this may seem an extravagance, but these people don't have the physical strength to get out and about and until now had nothing to occupy their time apart from weaving baskets, if their hands would allow this. A few days after they received all the goods I returned to see how things were going. To see them enjoying their new TV's with big smiles, confirmed to me that it was definitely the right decision.

Ron and I will continue in the future to help this Aged Care Home, they receive approximately AUS $1.20 per day, per resident to cover all food, clothing, power, gas, doctors visits and medication, actually all overheads apart from the staff wages. The residents rely on the local business and a primary school to make small donations where possible to make ends meet.
